Dr. Sullivan helps students track through a proven body of violin literature at the quickest pace the student can maintain. Because of this, her students regularly win awards at State Solo events and with the National Federation of Music Clubs, college scholarships, solos in concerto competitions, placement in competitive orchestras including All-Northwest and All-State Orchestras, leadership positions in their local orchestras, and in general surpass their peers of the same age in their technical/musical skills. To accomplish this, Dr. Sullivan’s lessons are intense and fast-paced, giving students the most efficient way to practice to generate the maximum benefit.
Because Dr. Sullivan has performed extensively as a soloist, recording artist, chamber musician, and held leadership and section positions in numerous symphonies across the world, she offers her students a vast amount of insight and experience. She has taught violin lessons since she was 13, and encourages her students to follow their own paths of performance, teaching, arts administration or other exciting fields. Her students tend to major, minor or supplement their college experience with playing and performing in some context. Dr. Sullivan enjoys writing letters of recommendation and is always available for career counseling.
Dr. Sullivan is delighted to work with students 6 years old through adults of any age and ability. Her love of teaching and figuring out the best pedagogical approaches for each student’s individual needs ensures that each student is engaged to their full capacity. The violin literature she selects is carefully crafted and is proven to move students forward leaving no deficit in their technical/musical knowledge. The repertoire is progressive, working from easy to more difficult with scales, etudes and pieces in a smooth process so that the student almost does not realize how much they are improving in a short amount of time.
Performance is a skill that Dr. Sullivan helps each student master as performance can be applied to other areas in a person’s life as well such as public speaking, giving presentations and engaging people in general. There is a mental/emotional component for each person to figure out in order to become a practiced and confident performer and Dr. Sullivan works to provide these opportunities in a safe, methodical way as students develop their skills to strengthen their performing abilities.
